The three gorges project, collectively known as the three gorges water conservancy project of the Yangtze river, is the largest water conservancy project in the world today. The three gorges dam is located in the middle section of the three gorges xiling gorge in the Yangtze river. The dam has a total length of 2,335 meters, a height of 185 meters, a normal water level of 175 meters, a total capacity of 39.3 billion cubic meters, and a flood control capacity of 22.15 billion cubic meters, equivalent to the capacity of four flood areas. The five-class lock can pass the 10,000-ton fleet, and the dam-navigable building can pass the 3000-ton passenger ship quickly.


The three gorges project adopts the plan of "first class development, first construction, stage storage and continuous migration". The total construction period of the main project is 17 years, which is divided into three stages. The first phase is 5 years, the second phase is 6 years and the third phase is 6 years. The three gorges project was started in 1993 and the great river was cut off in 1997. In 2003, the three gorges reservoir impoundment reached 135m and permanent navigable buildings and the first batch of units were used to generate electricity. In 2009, all the projects were completed and put into operation.


The three gorges project has ten comprehensive benefits including flood control, power generation, shipping, aquaculture, tourism, ecological protection, environmental purification, development migration, south-to-north water diversion and water supply and irrigation. Flood control is the main function of the three gorges project. It can raise the flood control standard of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze river from once in ten years to once in a hundred years.


After the completion of the three gorges hydropower station will be the largest hydropower station in the eight hydropower station, installed 26 units, the total capacity of 18.2 million kilowatts, the average annual output reached 84.7 billion degrees, a year of pay taxes a gezhouba project can be built.


The three gorges reservoir will improve shipping distance of 660 kilometers, allowing the 10,000-ton fleet to sail from hankou to chongqing.
